Carol Vernallis studied editing and camerawork closely in music videos. She observed that edits in music video come much more frequently than in film, that many stand out as disjuncture and that the editing seems to have a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song.
Vernallis' theory examines 4 concepts that relate in a way that music videos are constructed:
- Narrative
- Editing
- Camera movements and framing
- Diegesis
A song that i feel shows Vernallis' theory is Pokerface by Lady Gaga.
Editing: The editing that is used throughout the music video is obvious and they go with the beats of the song
- The beginning of the music video shows lady gaga getting out of the water and they play it backwards quickly and then forwards again.
- There are a lot of quick cuts and jump cuts are used
- Split screens of the same image are also used
Narrative:
- Different locations are being used with no set story with a beginning middle and end
- base tracks are used
- Dance routines are included
Camera movements and framing:
- The camera moves in time with the beat
- camera zooms in and out
- variety of shots used: Close up, long shot, wide shot...
Diegesis:
- She moves to the beat of the music
- Repetition is used
- instruments are not shown diegesis is not revealed
Most of the video is done through editing. From the images i have collected above we can see that the images they have created illustrate the words sung. Also some shots show that they present the lyrics on the screen. The video engages the audience very well and makes them want to keep watching it.
