Andrew Goodwin had a theory on music videos and believed there were 5 key features:
- Technical aspects of the music video
- Narrative or performance (story or meaning of music video)
- Relations of visuals to the song
- Seeing the sound (through the beats(
- The star image
illustration- This is when the lyrics of the song are being told in the video, so it tells a story. An example of this is Bruno Mars' 'The lazy song'
This is an example of illustration because Bruno Mars and the monkey dancers all do actions that are mentions in the lyrics. The whole dance is used to express the feelings and moods in the song.
Amplification - This is when new meanings are being introduced to the video and do not contradict with the lyrics therefore, adding layers of meaning.
This video is from Cheryl Cole and shows layers of meaning particularly from the dancing shots which then go to shots of her in car almost look like she's driving away from something. We also get other shots of her in front of a mirror giving us new meanings that she is trying to put across.
Disjuncture - This involves little connection between the lyric and video or in a way he meaning of the video is ignored, the video contradicts the lyrics. A good example of this would be Michael Jackson's 'Man in the mirror'.
This video is full of radical world events rather than showing even a man looking in the mirror. The video of the world events has a message however of how we could do things to help other's however the lyrics state 'if you wanna make the world a better place take a look at yourself then make a change'. This gives the impressions we should do something about ourselves rather than help others which the video shows.
